Do you think we need to do more for climate and environment in the software industry? Do you want to be one of the changemakers? Circular and climate friendly public procurements project is hosting a Nordic market dialogue on sustainable software on 25th of April. The results will be implemented by the public procurers of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. If you want to have a concrete impact on software sustainability, click the link below and sign up for the event.

Is digital green?

As information society development progresses, there is an increased need for digital infrastructure, new and faster devices, and software. While digital solutions have helped us to decrease CO2 emissions and continue to do so, the increased need for data processing and transfer has exploded with new software solutions and features.

We are forced to update our laptops and phones increasingly frequently, as requirements for running the software grow. The network model of development further increases the need for faster network connections and greater data center capacity.

Emissions from the ICT industry are already double of those from air traffic and are fastest growing of all industries, tripling this decade. In addition, e-waste is the fastest growing waste stream, doubling to over 100 million tons by 2040. For these reasons it’s crucial to put focus on the environmental effects of software and ways to lower their energy use.

Greening the digital

Nordic vision project Circular and climate friendly public procurements, funded by Nordic Council of Ministers, organizes market dialogue event on sustainable software. This is where you can make a difference.

As a participant of the event, you will receive the proposed public sector criteria suggestions before the event. In the event you are able to discuss and give feedback of the criteria in your own language in country specific discussion rooms.

Criteria drafts have been developed in MitViDi-project, funded by European Regional Fund and are already being used in Finland. In the event, you can give feedback to the criteria and discuss their content and implementation.

We will revise them based on the feedback and publish an improved set of criteria in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. In Finland, we will discuss advanced criteria. The goal is to encourage the market to produce more sustainable software and put Nordics in the forefront of software sustainability.

If you are a software producer, a public procurer, a consultant or a researcher in sustainable software, this is your chance to make a concrete impact. The joint session in the beginning of the event is open for all who want to learn more about the topic.
